About Plant- Mommillaria bombycina is a popular, solitary or clustering cactus that grows up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall. Some clones cluster aggressively and can form gorgeous, up to 3 feet (90 cm) wide mounds as they mature. The stems are bright-green to grey-green and up to 2.4 inches (6 cm) in diameter. The bulbous tubercles, surrounded by downy white hairs, have short white spines and much longer curved brown spines. The circular clusters of deep rose-pink flowers are borne on the upper surface in spring and summer.
Mammillaria Bombycina (Pincushion Cactus) Care
Light- Mammillaria species appreciate intense light. Provide bright, even light for the best results.
Water- Allow the soil mix to become nearly dry between waterings, but then water thoroughly. Immaculate drainage is essential, so never let the pots sit in water. Suspend watering in the winter, but mist occasionally.
Soil- A rich, fast-draining cactus mix is ideal for Pincushion cactus.
Temperature- In terms of temperatures, the Silken Pincushion cactus is fairly frost-hardy (down to 20 degrees F/-6.7 degrees Celsius), but prolonged exposure to low temperature is undesirable.
Fertilizer- During the growing season, fertilize with a cacti fertilizer mix. Suspend feeding during the dormant winter period.
